Old Town Kissimmee History
The town of Kissimmee was originally a small trading post, until after the Civil War. At that time, it was included in a purchase of four million acres of marshland and plains by a Mr. Hamilton Disston of Philadelphia for approximately 25 cents per acre. Retirees were attracted to the area in the 1950s, and with the opening of Walt Disney World, the whole area became world renowned as a vacation hot spot. The city of Kissimmee was founded in 1878, and many of the downtown buildings and old cobbled streets have been very well maintained. Old Town Kissimmee is a living history of shops, restaurants, amusements and rides. The historic downtown is the largest and oldest shopping area in the area.
